The Butterfly Effect

The title refers to the metaphorical butterfly effect, a popular principle in chaos theory which states that in any dynamic system small initial differences may, over time, lead to large unforeseen consequences.

 

Taking the form of Newton’s Cradle, a familiar structure, the piece is about cause and effect, toying with notions of interaction with the medium. The work challenges the viewer to have an effect on the piece, but opposing this- urges them not to as their actions may in fact cause destruction, questioning the fragility of the piece and life itself.

 

The silver sphere represents a starting point from which a knock on effect occurs. Its solidity and opacity suggests the unknown. Unseen, anonymous, unsung and untold.

The three water filled spheres represent the ripple effect and gathering momentum.

The final sphere is the beginning of the end, representing beauty destroyed.
